Welcome to Voice of a Dragon!

This is my series of online music classes. It is my aim to help you unlock the tools and techniques you need to create art without limits, namely in the medium of heavy metal.

Each lesson bundle typically contains a video, some mp3s, and a written handout further explaining some concepts, in case you learn better by reading. Once or twice a month (depending on everyones' schedules), I'll host a live streamed Office Hour for my Voice of a Dragon tier on Patreon, where you can bring any questions you have about the lesson content. We can also discuss anything you want to know about music career building, entrepreneurship, marketing, etc :)

It takes some time to create lesson plans, film and edit them, write and format the handouts, and arrange the backing tracks. I thank you for your patience as I slowly amass a library of information for you to consume about metal vocals, orchestration, songwriting, and lyric writing. :)

I studied music formally from age 5-22, and am all too familiar with pain of being the only metal kid in class. At best, my peers thought I was a bit of a novelty, and my teachers didn't really know what to do with me. I learned a lot, but pretty much had to find my own way when it came to applying those techniques to the kind of music I wanted to create. The closest thing I had to a metal mentor while getting my bachelors from Berklee College of Music was one glorious lesson with Francesco Ferrini from Fleshgod Apocalypse...

...So with this in mind, I aim to offer you metalhead-friendly bite-sized music lessons. This way, you can build the musical education that you want, and skip what isn't relevant for you (maths, random liberal arts, other stuff universities need to be accredited). :)

Here's a quick overview of my studies and experience:

-Bachelors Degree from Berklee College of Music (studied songwriting, voice, orchestration, music business)

-7 years writing, arranging, and performing with Seven Spires

-10 years of performing as a rock/metal vocalist in various bands

-1 world tour as a vocalist with Avantasia

-Co-writing with Sascha Paeth

-Higher National Diploma from the Academy of Contemporary Music (studied songwriting and music business)

-National Diploma from the Academy of Contemporary Music (studied vocal performance)

-Studied 10+ years of private voice lessons (cleans, essentially self-taught screams)

-Studied 6 years of piano lessons

-6 years in choirs

...And more.

Enough talk. I hope to see you over at my Patreon :)

Happy practicing!

A look at the foundations of bringing the power of chest voice into higher ranges. A great place to start! This is the stuff I know I can count on to get me through a show, no matter how poorly I slept, how brutal the air conditioning in the van is, or how jetlagged and exhausted my voice is.

This lesson bundle contains anecdotes, vocal exercises, explanations, and demonstrations in written and video form. It also includes some disclaimers, advice, and backing tracks for four vocal exercises for your guided practice.

Orchestration for Metal Musicians: Who Gets the Melody?
  • Orchestration for Metal Musicians: Who Gets the Melody?
In cart Not available Out of stock
$10.00

Frustrated from blindly stabbing in the dark with your "big orchestra" keyboard patch? Looking to create more emotive, effective orchestral arrangements for your musical endeavours, but don't quite know where to start?

In this lesson, you'll become more familiar with the sounds of each instrument's different expressions and ranges, so you can educate and refine your instincts when asking yourself, "Who gets the melody?" while orchestrating. We'll look deeper into how we experience and consume music as composers and as listeners, and how we can use that knowledge to our advantage when creating an emotional state change for our listeners.

This bundle contains a video, a written handout of sorts, a long exercise, some anecdotes, and some recommendations for further studies :) There will be a part II in the coming months!

*Please note: If you have trouble opening the zip file (for example, you're on a PC and open the file only to find an empty folder called "_MACOSX"), you now should be able to download each of the three individual files separately instead :)
